Rogan Brown and the Art of Science

Rogan Brown is a contemporary artist who is redefining the world of sculpture. Eschewing traditional materials such as stone and metal in favour of fragile paper, he creates sculptures that explore the natural world and science with fresh eyes. These artworks place organic forms under the microscope, magnifying them and distorting them to present new perspectives. About the Artist

Rogan is a British artist who now lives and works in France. He was trained in London, where he studied a BA at Goldsmiths’ college and an MA at Queen Mary. He cites all forms of science as a source of inspiration for his work, from the most minute physical entities such as quarks and quantum energy fields all the way up to biological structures and ecosystems. In this way, he offers an insight into science through the eyes of a non-scientis

Rogan Brown's work is inspired by the hidden worlds modern science reveals to us, whether it's the intricacy of microscopic cellular structures, the mesmerizing diversity of the bacterial realm or the surreal beauty of nature at the quantum scale.

His goal is to find accessible visual metaphors that make visible these complex structures. The resulting sculptures are built up from an accretion of multiple layers of hand and laser cut paper.

Paper embodies the paradoxical qualities that we see in nature: its fragility and durability, its strength and delicacy. Paper cutting as a traditional folk art form is characterized by its accessibility and simplicity and Brown both exploit and subvert those qualities in the work he makes. His ultimate aim is to remind us of the sublime beauty and strangeness of the natural world that surrounds us but which is hidden from our eyes.

My work is an exploration and re-presentation of natural organic forms both mineral and vegetal. I look for patterns and repeated motifs that run through natural phenomena at different scales, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, from individual cells to large scale geological formations.

I am inspired in part by the tradition of scientific drawing and model making, and particularly the work of artist-scientists such as Ernst Haeckel. But although my approach involves careful observation and detailed “scientific” preparatory drawings these are always superseded by the work of the imagination; everything has to be refracted through the prism of the imagination, estranged and in some way transformed.

I want to communicate my fascination with the immense complexity and intricacy of natural forms and this is why the process behind my work is so important. Each sculpture is hugely time consuming and labour-intensive and this work is an essential element not only in the construction but also in the meaning of each piece. The finished artefact is really only the ghostly
