Dr. Mary Gray

Dr. Mary Gray is the author of books and papers in the fields of mathematics, mathematics education, computer science, applied statistics, economic equity, discrimination law, and academic freedom. She has lectured throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Her current research interests include applications of statistics in litigation, ethical issues in statistics, intellectual property and academic freedom, and language and gender issues in mathematics. Her work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Karim Rida Said Foundation in London.

Professor Gray has served as consultant and expert witness on issues of university governance, academic freedom and tenure, faculty personnel policies, educational equity, and technology in higher education in the United States, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. She is currently visiting the Kings College (London) School of Medicine.

Mary Lee Wheat Gray was born in Nebraska in 1938. Her favorite subjects in high school were mathematics, history and physics. She then went on to receive her bachelor of science degree in mathematics and physics from Hastings College in 1959, graduating at the top of her class. With the assistance of a Fulbright scholarship, she spent one year at the J.W.Goethe Universität in Frankfurt, Germany, then began graduate studies at the University of Kansas. She earned her master's degree in 1962 and her Ph.D. in 1964 in the area of ring theory, becoming only the second woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics at Kansas. The first had been in 1926. Her thesis dissertation was entitled "Radical Subcategories." An article with this title was published in the Pacific Journal of Mathematics, Vol. 23 (1967), p79-89 [Abstract].
