Nokia: How a Finnish paper mill grew into a world-renowned company

There is much to learn from the events that made Nokia one of the greatest success stories to come out of Finland and the Nordic region, and from the challenges it has faced since. The story of Nokia is often told as a classic rise and fall narrative, with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy or the doomed fate of Norse mythology. But as with most real-life stories, nothing about what happened to Nokia was inevitable; instead, it shows us how difficult it can be to choose the best response when change happens to you, rather than the change coming from you. Read on to find out what this former got right and what it got wrong along the way.

Fate or choice?

In the Old Norse myths, the Norns decided your fate, right up until your dying day. There was nothing you could do to change this; you could only decide how you met your end, either as a coward or as a fighter. When we see large companies and corporations around us today, it is easy to think that they are “too big to fail”, but as several retailers in the UK h

The rise and fall of Nokia

Starting a business is often risky, but it is well worth the risk when it works.

We have seen the rise of companies that had nothing when they started but are now dominant players in their respective industries. We have also seen companies that started strong but could never dominate their respective industries and then failed over time.

But what has piqued my interest are stories about dominant companies that failed all of a sudden. These companies were once etched into people’s minds but have since become a symbol of nostalgia. One such company, which was the biggest in its industry before it failed catastrophically, is Nokia.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Nokia was the biggest mobile company in the world. The number-one best-selling cell phone of all time to this day was made by Nokia. If you were born in the ‘80s or ‘90s, Nokia probably holds a distinct and sweet memory for you. There is a very high chance that the first phone, or at least the first mobile phone, you owned was one made by Nokia. It had no special features, unlike today’s smartphones. W

In 1967, the Nokia corporation was formed. In the late 20th century, the company took advantage of the increasing popularity of computer and mobile phones. However, increased competition and other market forces caused changes in Nokia's business arrangements. In 2014, Nokia's mobile phone business was sold to Microsoft.

19th century

The name "Nokia" is derived from the town of Nokia, Finland and the nearby Nokianvirta River, which was located next to the company’s original factory. The commercial entities that preceded the modern-day Nokia company included Nokia Ab (Nokia company); Suomen Gummitehdas Oy (Finnish Rubber Works Ltd); and Suomen Kaapelitehdas Oy (Finnish Cable Works Ltd).[1]
