Djavad Mowafaghian
MADAM CHANCELLOR, as a fatherless child growing up in Tehran, Djavad Mowafaghian took his mother’s lessons about kindness and generosity deeply to heart. Her influence during his early years manifested in remarkable acts of philanthropy that have improved access to healthcare and education for children in many parts of the world.
During the 1970s, an ambitious entrepreneurial spirit propelled him to develop one of Iran’s largest general contracting companies. He subsequently moved to Switzerland, but remained connected to his homeland by funding the construction of 26 elementary, middle and technical schools, some of which were specifically designed for visual- and hearing-impaired students, and one for physically disabled girls.
In 1987, Mr. Mowafaghian immigrated to Vancouver, where he established a commercial real estate development company and continued to support a wide range of education and healthcare initiatives in Europe. In 2003 he established the Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation, which has provided generous and critically important support to nume

Djavad Mowafaghian, CM, OBC (1927 – 2022)
It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we learned of the passing of Dr. Djavad Mowafaghian. Affectionately called “Dr. M” by those whom he’s helped through his generosity, he was one of Canada’s most visionary philanthropists and a dear friend of UBC. His life philosophy—that if you help underprivileged children, their entire community benefits—was a driving force behind his philanthropy. In his homeland of Iran, he funded the construction of 26 schools in Tehran’s most impoverished neighborhoods and also invested in health and education projects in Europe, India, Africa, and Haiti.
This spirit of generosity led him to establish the Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation in 2003. The mandate, “helping children around the world through health and education,” was in

B.C. will be home to a centre that will lead the way in North America by uniting brain health and patient care, announced the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, and Health Minister Michael de Jong, who attended today’s groundbreaking at UBC Hospital.
Uniting psychiatry, neurology and neuroscience, the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health will revolutionize brain health by bringing research together with care. All the areas of brain health will be under one roof, housing hundreds of scientists and health-care professionals who will treat and pioneer new treatments and cures for patients affected by brain diseases and injury.
Brain diseases result in a significant drain on workforce resources and challenge our health-care system. This new centre will promote effective and efficient use of health-care resources by getting British Columbians access to early intervention and the best possible treatment to promote rapid recovery. Patients will receive better care as the centre is designed with their special needs in mind. It o
