The singer-songwriter Francesco De Gregori - popularly known as "Il Principe dei cantautori" (the prince of the singer-songwriters) – was born on this day in 1951.

Born in Rome, De Gregori has released around 40 albums in a career spanning 45 years, selling more than five million records.

Famous for the elegant and often poetic nature of his lyrics, De Gregori was once described by Bob Dylan as an “Italian folk hero”.

De Gregori acknowledges Dylan as one if his biggest inspirations and influences, along with Leonard Cohen and the Italian singer Fabrizio de André.  Covers of Dylan songs have regularly featured in his stage performances. He made an album in 2015 entitled Love and Theft: De Gregori Sings Bob Dylan.

Born into a middle class family – his father was a librarian, his mother a teacher - De Gregori spent his youth living in Rome or on the Adriatic coast at Pescara. He began to develop his musical career at the Folkstudio in Rome

Influenced by Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, Francesco De Gregori shot to fame as “Il Principe dei cantautori” with his 1976-album Bufalo Bill. De Gregori himself defined Bufalo Bill as his most accomplished record. It has been the following release, though, simply entitled De Gregori, featuring the memorable song Generale, that established this outstanding Italian singer-songwriter far across the borders of his home country. De Gregori, who has always declared his inclination to left-wing ideas and ideals, is playing a very exclusive Luxembourg show at the A.

Francesco De Gregori was born in Rome 4th April 1951.  He began performing and writing lyrics at the age of just sixteen.

His debut dates back to 1972 with the album «Theorius Campus» composed together with his friend Venditti. The following year Francesco De Gregori released the single «Alice non lo sa», that was quietly successful.

In 1974 the profound «Francesco De Gregori» album was released. The same year, he began working with Fabrizio De Andrè.

In 1975 he released «Rimmel», an album containing songs that were to become classics of Italian music. De Gregori himself defined “Bufalo Bill” (1976), as «my most accomplished record».

In 1978, he released a new album: «De Gregori» featuring memorable songs like «Generale»,  destined to become hugely famous.

In 1979 Francesco De Gregori returned to the stage to perform live, together with Lucio Dalla and Ron on a tour called «Banana Republic». Shortly afterwards he recorded the album «Viva l’Italia» in the studio with Andrew Loog Oldham.
