James D. Lockyer is Partner at KMB Law and a member of the firms Business & Estate Succession and Real Estate & Land Development groups.
He began his legal career as counsel for CIBC’s Information Technology Group before entering private practice in Brampton and Caledon. In private practice, James spent 10 years as a litigator representing clients on various civil matters and at all levels of court up to the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
Over the next 20 years, James has advised corporate clients on various issues including leases, commercial refinancing, re-organizations, negotiated buyouts and business succession planning.
In addition to James’s corporate and commercial work, he also works closely with individuals, families and business owners assisting them with their real estate needs and wills, trusts, estate planning and estate administration.
James is a graduate of McMaster University and Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. James has been an instructor at Sheridan College, Faculty of Continuing Education, teaching Business Law.

James Edward Lockyer, QC CD (born May 27, 1949 in Halifax, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian lawyer, law professor, and former politician.
Lockyer graduated with a BA degree from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick then earned his LLB at the University of New Brunswick. He went on to London, England to study at the London School of Economics and Political Science, obtaining his LLM degree in 1976. Fluent in the French language, he obtained a DEA from the Université de Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne) in 1979.
After being admitted to the Barrister's Society of New Brunswick in September 1975, Lockyer practiced law with the Moncton law firm of Stewart & Cooper. In November 1977 he became the first full-time person hired by the Université de Moncton for its new Faculté de droit which was established to teach common law in French. Lockyer taught at the law school until June 1987. During this time he was named vice-dean and acting dean in 1983 and was Dean of the Faculté de droit from 1984 to 1987. A resident of Peel Region since 1982, Jim began his legal career as counsel for CIBC’s Information Technology Group before entering private practice in Brampton and Caledon.
A graduate of McMaster University and Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, Jim has been an instructor at Sheridan College, Faculty of Continuing Education teaching Business Law.
Outside of the office, you will most likely find Jim at one of southern Ontario’s hockey arenas. Jim coached for a number of years in the Brampton Minor Hockey Association when, as a volunteer Big Brother, Jim was paired with his little brother Ryan. When Jim’s two daughters came along, Jim found himself coaching, managing and helping the Brampton Canadettes Girls Hockey Association. Most recently, Jim has fulfilled the role of a lot of hockey parents, driver.
Aside from hockey, Jim’s other volunteer work has included serving on the Board of Directors of the Brampton Curling Club and Hospice Caledon. Most recently, Jim has been selected to work as a volunteer firefighter with Caledon Fire and Emergency S
