Eiskalt (englischer Originaltitel: Stone Cold) ist ein Jugendroman von Robert Swindells, der 1993 beim Verlag Hamish Hamilton veröffentlicht wurde. Die deutsche Erstausgabe erschien 1997 beim Verlag Sauerländer.[1] Im Mittelpunkt der Handlung stehen der 16-jährige Link, der von zu Hause wegläuft und obdachlos wird, sowie der 47-jährige Shelter, der die Londoner Straßen von Obdachlosen säubern will, indem er sie in sein Haus lockt und tötet.
Der Roman gewann 1993 die Carnegie Medal sowie den Sheffield Book Award[2] und wird heutzutage gelegentlich als Schullektüre verwendet.[3] Außerdem wurde er 1997 in einer kurzen Fernsehserie von Stephen Whittaker verfilmt und auf BBC ausgestrahlt.[4]
Handlung

Erst im letzten Kapitel vereinen sich beide Geschichten. Link is homeless, frightened and alone on the streets at the age of sixteen. Estranged from family and society, he survives with the help of the more streetwise Ginger. But then Ginger goes missing. As homeless teenagers mysteriously disappear, one by one, Link feels a sickening sense of foreboding...[citation needed] The story, told in a dual narrative, follows Link and Shelter and their experience of homelessness. After Link's father abandons his family, Link's mother starts a relationship with a new boyfriend, Vincent, who forces Link out of the family home in Bradford. He first won the Children's Book Award with Brother in the Land (1984), a novel set in a post-apocalyptic world. Swindells was a supporter of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and is quoted as saying that the work "... came out of my own anger and frustration ... you can’t kill selectively with nuclear weapons, you wipe out millions of people ...".
