John Michael Scalzi II (born May 10, 1969) is an American science fiction author and former president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He is best known for his Old Man's War series, three novels of which have been nominated for the Hugo Award, and for his blog Whatever, where he has written on a number of topics since 1998. He won the Hugo Award for Best Fan Writer in 2008 based predominantly on that blog, which he has also used for several charity drives. His novel Redshirts won the 2013 Hugo Award for Best Novel. He has written non-fiction books and columns on diverse topics such as finance, video games, films, astronomy, writing and politics, and served as a creative consultant for the TV series Stargate Universe.[1]

John Scalzi debuted in 2005 with Old Man's War, which was nominated for the Hugo Award and won him the Campbell/Astounding Award for Best New Writer. In the time since, Scalzi has published 16 other novels, including his most recent, the New York Times best seller The Kaiju Preservation Society. Scalzi won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2013 for Redshirts, and has won several other notable awards including the Locus Award, the Dragon Award, and the Seiun Award. In 2016 he was presented with the Governor's Award for the Arts in Ohio.
In addition to fiction, Scalzi has written numerous nonfiction books on the subjects of astronomy, science-fiction film, writing, and humor. From 2010 to 2013, he was president of SFWA, the genre's preeminent organization for authors and writers. He has written several episodes of the Emmy-winning Netflix animated series Love Death + Robots, and was the Creative Consultant for the Stargate: Universe television series.
