Brooding, charismatic and sensuously evil villains were the stock and trade of Michael Wincott, a classically trained stage actor who first found broad recognition as the malevolent Guy of Gisborne in the Kevin Costner hit "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991). The Toronto-born Wincott began acting in Canadian film and television before moving to New York City to attend Julliard School of Drama. There, he established himself on stage in the original 1987 production of "Talk Radio" and on film in Oliver Stone's big screen adaptation of the play the following year. Wincott worked steadily on stage and television, appearing in two more back-to-back films for Oliver Stone, "Born of the Fourth of July" (1989) and "The Doors" (1991), but it would be his performance as Guy of Gisborne in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991) that would introduce Wincott to his then largest audience. Widely respected among peers for his fearless commitment, Michael Anthony Claudio Wincott was born to an English father and Italian mother in Scarborough, a working class suburb of Toronto. His career began fortuitously in 1976 at the CBC, cast by Deidre Bowen, Clare Walker and director Mike Newell as the troubled protagonist, Cole Buckley, opposite Kate Reid in writer Rochelle Kosar's Earthbound. He continued his novitiate in the city's leading contemporary theaters, working with Ken Gass at Factory Theatre Lab, Bill Glassco at The Tarragon Theatre and William Lane at Toronto Free Theatre. Biography and career[]

Wincott was born in Toronto, Ontario. He is the younger brother of actor Jeffrey Wincott, who portrayed Davis in Season 2 of 24. As a child, Wincott was a fan of musician Keith Richards and played drums in a jazz band. After graduating from Juilliard in 1986, Wincott joined Joseph Papp's Public Theater in New York City, appearing in plays such as Serious Money, Road, The Secret Rapture, and State of Shock.

In 1991, Wincott gained recognition for his role in Kevin Reynold's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves as the devious Guy of Gisbourne, starring alongside Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman. This led to a number of film roles as villains, including Ridley Scott's 1492: Conquest of Paradise (with Arnold Vosloo), Romeo is Bleeding (with James Cromwell and Will Patton), and The Three Musketeers, starring Kiefer Sutherland.
