GusGus, an ensemble from Iceland, appeared on the horizon of the dance scene with Polydistortion (Iceland, 1995 - 4AD, 1997), one of those works of art that subverts and redefines the existing paradigm. The futuristic funk of Gun and the psychedelic techno of Believe epitomize the modus operandi of the band: enhance the melodic song format, while reducing the emotional impact, through an eccentric use of electronics. Gun's core is a shuffle-like polyrhythm of percussions and keyboards that has a life of its own. The soul chanting is a mere parasite on the rhythm's metabolism, an expedient that takes away the emotion from the vocals. African tribalism and a bombing bass propel Believe.
The roots of GusGus' music are in the 1970s and 1980s, and several tracks can be read as tributes to Prince and Barry White (Barry, Polyesterday). But, even when the band sticks to the classic formats of funk and soul, the results seem to land on Earth from another planet, certainly from another culture. GusGus is a techno band from Reykjavík, Iceland founded in 1995. Current members are President Bongo, Biggi Veira & Earth. They are currently working on their 6th studio album, called “Forever“. It’s due for release in February of 2007.

History
Initially formed as a film and actor’s collective, they became mostly known for their electronic music. GusGus has had a varied lineup: Birgir Þórarinsson (aka Biggi Veira), Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson, Magnús Jónsson, Sigurður Kjartansson, Stefán Árni Þorgeirsson, Hafdís Huld Hákonardóttir, Emilíana Torrini, Urður Hákonardóttir (aka Earth), Magnús Guðmundsson (aka Herb Legowitz, and Buckmaster DeLaCruz), Stephan Stephensen (aka Alfred More, aka President Bongo) and Baldur Stefánsson.
Several lineup changes have occurred, and their current incarnation consists of 3 members (President Bongo, Earth and Biggi Veira).

There are several artists named Gus:

1) A Canadian punk rock band from the 90s from Vancouver, BC. They released a split, two eps and a full length album.

2) A punk band from Florida.

3) Gus, also on last.fm as Gus Black is a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles California. Last century he released two records for Almo Sounds under the name “Gus”, but now records under his full name, Gus Black. His cover of “Don’t Fear the Reaper” was on the soundtrack for the original Scream movie. His songs have been featured in television shows, including Alias, Smallville, and One Tree Hill. He likes animals, food, water, and most of all good music. .

4) A funk rock band from Melbourne, Australia in the early 90s. The released an EP entitled "Hallucinations" and later became Aspirin.

5) Gus Papas from Mississauga, Ontario is a Canadian classic rock guitarist who released the album Convicted! in 1980 which featured the club rock hit I'm not finished. He had several bands since then, e.g. Gus & The New Breed, Legal Tender
