Barna da Siena

Italian painter

Barna da Siena, also known as Berna di Siena, was presumed to be a Sienese painter active from about 1330 to 1350.

The painter was first referred to by Lorenzo Ghiberti in his I Commentarii (mid 15th century) as a Sienese painter who painted several works in Tuscany, including many stories from the Old Testament in San Gimignano. Giorgio Vasari referred in the first edition of his Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects (1550) to the Sienese painter ‘Berna’ who was responsible for frescos of Old Testament scenes in the Collegiata di San Gimignano. (active c.1350). Sienese painter. The source material on him is vague and confusing, and although he has been described as the leading Sienese painter of his period, some scholars think that he is a fictitious character and prefer to assign the works attributed to him to other hands. In his Commentarii, Ghiberti said that Barna worked in the Collegiata at S. Gimignano, and the fresco series on the life of Christ there is the core around which attempts have been made to reconstruct his oeuvre (among the works that have been given to him is Christ Carrying the Cross in the Frick Collection, New York). As with Simone Martini (traditionally Barna's master), drawing plays a dominant part in this oeuvre, but whereas Simone's line is a graceful arabesque, Barna's is direct and thrusting, his figures having a more dramatic vigour than any in previous Sienese painting.

“The Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine” by Barna da Siena

Many artists in Medieval Europe have painted the legend of “The Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine”. The story goes that St. Catherine’s mission, given by god, was to purify the corrupt Catholic Church of the mid 1300’s. One of her many visions supplied by Christ was he presenting her a wring of marriage and chastity. When awoken from the vision this ring was invisible but St. Catherine held true to her vow. Also from this promise she devoted herself to serve the less fortunate people of the world. This rendition by the also mysterious artist, Barna da Siena, beautifully depicts other stories of atonement.

The biography of Barna da Siena is drenched in uncertainty. It has recently been proven that his existence is fictional but the real artist behind so many paintings has yet to been determined. The man is said
