Born in Paris in 1935, Jean-Pierre Cassigneul was into a family devoted to fashion, a microcosm where Paris identifies women. He is the grandson and son of the founders of the Jean Dessès fashion house. Jean-Pierre Cassigneul evolves in this atmosphere. He breathes there and, at his height, from his distance, observes perhaps unwittingly, but from within, this strange cult of woman and elegance. The presence of the woman will multiply from then on in the world of the painter.

He had a very happy childhood, the war a little constraining, then an almost idyllic adolescence, student of the Academy Charpentier, then of the National School of the Beaux-Arts. Life really begins for Cassigneul when he finds Paris. He quickly became Associate of the Salon d’Automne. The exhibitions follow one another in France then in the United States and simultaneously in Japan.

Jean-Pierre Cassigneul is best known for his striking compositions of fashionable women in floral hats. Using vibrant color and smoky contour, his paintings evoke both the avant-garde graphic sensibilities of Les Nabis, particularly Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard, as well as the radical color palette and sensuous portraiture of Kees van Dongen.

Cassigneul was born in 1935 in Paris. He had his first solo exhibition at the age of 17 at Galerie Lucy Krohg. Cassigneul studied at l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris and was later instructed by the French painter Roger Chapelain-Midy. In 1958, he had his first exhibition at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts, and the following year he was appointed a member of the Salon d’Automne.

Cassigneul has exhibited widely throughout Europe, Japan and the United States, including shows at the Gallery Tivey Faucon in Paris, Gallery Tamenaga in Japan, and Wally Findlay Gallery in New York. He currently lives and works in Paris.

The painter Jean-Pierre Cassigneul grew up in the unconventional–and glamourous– world of Parisian haute couture. His father was Jean Dessès (1904–1970), founder and primary designer of a leading fashion house. Dessès himself was born Jean Demètre in Alexandria, Egypt, to Greek parents; there, he received a classical education and was sent to Paris to study law in the early 1920s. Dessès’s interest soon turned to fashion, however, and he began working for Maison Jane in 1925. By 1937, he launched his own fashion house amid the chic environs of Avenue Georges V, featuring his line of classically inspired clothing. [i]
