James Hamilton was born the son of Andrew Hamilton and Anne Browne, probably in Virginia. His father was the Philadelphia lawyer famous as the defender of New York printer John Peter Zenger. James was educated in Philadelphia and England before becoming a practicing lawyer in 1731.
After succeeding his father as prothonotary of Pennsylvania’s supreme court in 1733, James Hamilton remained politically active in Pennsylvania for many years. At the local level, Hamilton served as an alderman and as mayor of Philadelphia. In the colonial era, he held a number of posts at the provincial level, including assemblyman, member of the Provincial Council, and lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania.
He served as president of the American Philosophical Society, and as president of the Board of Trustees of the Academy, College and Charity School of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania) in 1764 and from 1771 to 1773. He was also an ardent supporter of painter Benjamin West.

James Hamilton is an American photographer, best known for his documentation of the New York Cityfilm, art and music scene of the 1970s and 1980s.
Life
James Hamilton’s career began as a painting student at Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, NY, where he studied from fall, 1964 to summer, 1966. He swiftly changed gears after securing a summer job at the studio of fashion photographer Alberto Rizzo. It was while employed there that Hamilton learned to use a darkroom and purchased his first camera, a Nikon Rangefinder, which he traded with Rizzo for a Nikon F. His passion for photography was ignited by shooting in the street, as opposed to the confines of the studio. By summer’s end James had decided not to finish his last two years at the school, but to instead remain at the studio with Rizzo.

James Alexander Hamilton (April 14, 1788 – September 24, 1878)[1] was an American soldier, acting Secretary of State, and the third son of Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He entered politics as a Democrat and supporter of Andrew Jackson.
Early life and education
Hamilton was born on April 14, 1788,[1] the fourth child of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton.[2] Hamilton later wrote of his childhood:
