Shining band biography

Formed in 1996, Shining is a Swedish black metal band that incorporate doom metal elements in their music. Due to the depressive undertones of their music and the mostly suicide-themed lyrics, Shining are often referred to as "suicidal black metal".

Suicide, self-destruction and the abuse of the human flesh & mind, these three topics are the main issues dealt with in Shining's music. The band has since its very beginning been cursed and the individuals within suffered from enormous problems because of the fact that the band still lives on. Actually this might be the explanation for about 9 people being kicked out of the band one by one until the year of 2000, still the band stands in obscurity. During the earlier period of the band, Kvarforth gathered a temporary line-up and released the 7" vinyl "Submit To Selfdestruction" in 1998 through his own label, Selbsmord Services. In the year of 2000 Kvarforth finally managed to sum up the minds of two others in order to record the debut full-length album, "I - Within Deep Dark Chambers". This ve

Norwegian band

This article is about the Norwegian avant-garde metal band. For the Swedish black metal band, see Shining (Swedish band).

Shining (stylized as SHINING) is a Norwegian experimental band from Oslo. Thirteen musicians have been a part of the band's lineup in its history, with singer, guitarist, saxophonist, and songwriter Jørgen Munkeby as its leading force and only constant member. The band is also called SHINING (NOR) to avoid confusion with the Swedish black metal band of the same name.

Shining was created in 1999 as an acoustic instrumental jazz quartet consisting of Munkeby, drummer Torstein Lofthus, pianist Morten Qvenild, and double bassist Aslak Hartberg. They released their first albums Where the Ragged People Go and Sweet Shanghai Devil in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Their 2005 album In the Kingdom of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster led the band into a more avant-garde, electric, and rock-oriented sound, with Qvenild playing synthesizers and other electronic keyboards and Hartberg mostly using bass guitar instead of do

Their self-titled debut (2020) showcased cutting edge melodic metal songwriting techniques from Thorsen combined with the outstanding vocal abilities of Boals. Thorson and Boals now present “Postcards From the End of the World”, their sophomore album, which again highlights the outstanding collaboration between the two musicians. This album takes up where the debut left off, comprised of ten songs of modern power metal with the combination of Boals’ lung-busting vocals and Thorsen’s blistering guitar skills. Completing the lineup are Oleg Smirnoff on keyboards & piano, Nik Mazzucconi on bass, and Matt Peruzzi on drums.

The roots of Thorson and Boal's artistic collaboration goes back to 2014, when the Italian power/progressive metal band Labyrinth was faced with the dilemma of moving forward without their long-time singer Roberto Tiranti. The band invited Boals to join them and began work on new songs which woul
