Blount attended Diggs Chapel - a one-room schoolhouse built by Black members of the local community - in Hickory, Virginia. The school was built after the Civil War to educate former slaves, their children, and Native Americans.[4][2]
In an interview with The Virginian, Griffin recalled that her school "didn't have textbooks. [They] later got them from the white schools." Bessie attended Community Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Newark and successfully obtained a degree in nursing and while working on her degree she developed a passion for physical therapy.
The next step in her developing a distinguished career was attending " Panzer College of Physical Education (now Montclair State University) and Union County Junior College (Union County College) where she obtained certification
