Blount attended Diggs Chapel - a one-room schoolhouse built by Black members of the local community - in Hickory, Virginia. The school was built after the Civil War to educate former slaves, their children, and Native Americans.[4][2]

In an interview with The Virginian, Griffin recalled that her school "didn't have textbooks. [They] later got them from the white schools." Miss Blount was born November 24th, 1914 in Hickory, Virginia (now known as Chesapeake, Virginia.)

Bessie stopped attending school in the sixth grade, she obtained her GED after the family moved to Newfield, New Jersey.

Bessie attended Community Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Newark and successfully obtained a degree in nursing and while working on her degree she developed a passion for physical therapy.

The next step in her developing a distinguished career was attending " Panzer College of Physical Education (now Montclair State University) and Union County Junior College (Union County College) where she obtained certification
