Born at Llangernyw, Denbighshire 30 November 1852, the son of a shoemaker. Apprenticed to his father at 12 years of age, he had an arduous struggle for education, but later qualified as certificated teacher at Bangor Normal College and for two years was master of an elementary school at Brynaman, Glamorganshire. He then decided to enter the Calvinistic Methodist ministry, won a Dr. Williams scholarship, and, in 1875, entered Glasgow University, where Edward Caird had a dominating influence on his thought and career. Graduating in 1878, he won the Clark fellowship, which gave him four years at Oxford and in Germany. In 1882 he married Annie Walker, of Kilbirnie.

A few years ago I was living a life of blissful retirement in the south-east of France when I became interested in my family history. I had accompanied my wife to France so she could improve her French. This part of the country – the Department of Languedoc-Roussillon – is the land of bullfighting, rugby and robust red wines. Vineyards dominate the landscape and, on the coast, white sandy beaches abound.

With plenty of time on my hands, and ignoring advice that family history research can be both addictive and consuming, I embarked on my road of discovery. Five years have passed and that journey has presented fascinating and surprising outcomes, particularly concerning many of my Tasmanian ancestors.

This story concerns just one.

Henry Jones, my great grandfather, was honoured with a knighthood by King George V in the New Year’s honours list of 1919. The citation read, “An architect of his own fortunes and his ability and enterprise had a giant influence upon the progress of Hobart and the state of Tasmania.”

Henry Jones (2 November 1831 – 10 February 1899) was an English writer under the name "Cavendish", an authority on whist and other card games, tennis and other lawn games.[1]

Biography

Henry Jones was born in London, the eldest son of surgeon Henry Derviche Jones. He attended King's College School, Wimbledon from 1842 to 1848, and entered St Bartholomew's Hospital as a student during the 1849/50 session.[2] His signature can be seen in the hospital's archives in the student signature book (a book that students signed when they began their studies) for the 1849/50 and 1850/1 sessions, where his address is given as 23 Soho Square.
