When he was born to David and Ruth Gomez on July 29, 1971, doctors described Edward James Gomez as a “Mongoloid child,” and his parents were advised that he wouldn’t live very long and should be institutionalized, a Saginaw News account at the time reported.
But the Carrollton Township couple brought him home to his three siblings, Theresa, then 8, Patty, 7, and 2-year-old Michael, and they explained to their children that Eddie was
