Umi Garrett is an American classical pianist who has recently graduated from the Juilliard School, studying with Prof. Hung-Kuan Chen and Prof. Matti Raekallio. She has also studied privately with Prof. John Perry and Mrs. Mina Hirobe-Perry.
Most recently, Umi Garrett was awarded 4th prize at the 2020 National Chopin Competition and 1st prize in the Juilliard School’s concerto competition, performing Ravel’s G Major Concerto. She was a finalist at the Young Concert Artists Competition in 2020 and Canada International Piano Competition in 2021. Umi Garrett is a highly accomplished solo, collaborative, and chamber pianist based in New York City. A first-prize winner of the Juilliard School's Concerto Competition and a finalist at the National Chopin Piano Competition, Umi has performed numerous recitals in the United States and internationally. As a dedicated collaborator, Umi has performed at renowned competitions such as the Primrose International Viola Competition and the Sphinx Competition with prize-winners. Most recently, Umi was awarded the John Newmark Prize for Best Collaborative Pianist for her performances with finalist Nathan Meltzer at the 2023 Montreal International Violin Competition.
Umi has performed and toured with orchestras such as the Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Boca Raton, Boston Symphony and Pops, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Wuhan Symphony Orchestra, and the New Mexico Philharmonic. At 8 years old, Umi Garrett could rattle off a whole Liszt Concert Étude on international television. What’s not to love?
Ten years ago, Umi Garrett was just eight years old when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and played one of Liszt’s notoriously fiendish Concert Études, Gnomenreigen (‘Dance of the Gnomes’).
She also played a couple of bursts of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ backwards – then upside down.

Umi had started playing the piano at the age of four, and was banned from playing it at certain times because she kept disturbing the neighbours.
“I want to start playing the piano when I wake up, but I don’t want to annoy the neighbours, so I have a certain time I can start playing, and a cut-off time,” she told Ellen.
Umi is now 18, and is a professional pianist (who’d have guessed) and Young Steinway Artist. Here’s what she sounds like:
