Jan Schakowsky
Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky has earned a reputation as a liberal progressive for her stances on issues ranging from health care to marijuana legalization. Schakowsky earned a BS in elementary education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1965. She got her start in politics in 1969 when she founded the consumer advocacy group National Consumers Unite, which successfully advocated for freshness dates on supermarket packaging. From 1976 to 1985, she was program director for Illinois Public Action, a major public interest group, then became executive director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens from 1985 to 1990. After spending nine years in the Illinois House of Representatives, she was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1998. She served on the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and as the co–chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues. Janice D. Schakowsky was born Janice Danoff in Chicago on May 26, 1944; the daughter of Tillie (née Cosnow) and Irwin Danoff. Her parents were Jewish immigrants, her father from Lithuania and her mother from Russia.
Schakowsky attended Sullivan High School in Chicago before going to the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where she graduated with a B.S. in elementary education.
Schakowsky fought for the public interest and rights of Illinois citizens for 20 years before seeking elected office. In 1969, as a consumer advocate, she began the fight that put freshness dates on products sold in the supermarket. As Program Director from 1976 to 1985 of Illinois Public Action, the state’s largest public interest organization, she fought for energy reform and stronger protection from toxic chemicals.

Janice Schakowsky (shə-KOW-skee; née Danoff; born May 26, 1944) is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative from Illinois's 9th congressional district since 1999, and previous served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives (1991–1998). She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Her district is anchored in Chicago's North Side, including much of the area bordering Lake Michigan. It also includes many of Chicago's northern suburbs, including Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Evanston, Glenview, Kenilworth, Mount Prospect, Niles, Park Ridge, Rosemont, Skokie, Wilmette, and Winnetka, as of the decennialredistricting following the 2010 United States census.[1]
